Pierre Bahurel is the director general of Mercator Ocean International. He has worked on space altimetry, modelling and data assimilation applied to operational oceanography and was among the founders of Mercator Ocean in 1995, which he has been leading and developing since then. Mercator Ocean is today one of the world's leading centres delivering operational ocean information worldwide and is the entrusted entity to develop and implement the European Copernicus Marine Service, the European Digital Twin of the Ocean and the United Nations Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre for Ocean Prediction. Since 2022, Mercator Ocean has begun the process of transforming into an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to Digital Ocean Systems and Information Services.
