Bio
Prof. Swadhin K. Behera is Counselor for International Relations at JAMSTEC, Japan, and an internationally recognized climate and ocean scientist. His research has made pioneering contributions to understanding coupled ocean–atmosphere dynamics, seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction, and climate services, including the discovery and understanding of major climate modes such as the Indian Ocean Dipole, Indian Ocean Subtropical Dipole, ENSO Modoki, and Ningaloo Niño. He led the development of the SINTEX-F coupled climate prediction system, which has been widely used for climate forecasting and societal applications.
His current research focuses on AI/ML-based prediction systems, digital twins of the ocean, climate extremes, and climate risk applications. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tokyo and a Visiting Professor at Nagasaki University. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a VAIBHAV Fellow of the Government of India. He serves as Co-Chair of the UN Decade Digital Twins of the Ocean Programme and Chair of the Western Pacific Regional Team of the UN Ocean Decade OceanPrediction DCC. He has published more than 200 scientific articles in international journals.
