This opening session will set the scene by highlighting the growing impacts of marine heatwaves and other ocean extremes across Asia, and their consequences for marine ecosystems, fisheries, coastal communities and regional economies. It will introduce the urgent need for stronger ocean monitoring and prediction, the role of the OceanPrediction DCC within the UN Ocean Decade, and the importance of closer collaboration between science, operational forecasting centres, policymakers and end users.
