Practical information

A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into Benin.

You may be asked to present the original International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) upon arrival.

Please refer to your local health authority or travel vaccination centre to ensure your vaccinations are up to date before your departure.

The official currency in Benin is the West African CFA Franc (XOF). The CFA Franc is shared by eight West African countries and has a fixed exchange rate with the Euro (1 EUR = 655.957 XOF).

ATMs are widely available throughout Cotonou, particularly at banks, shopping centres and major hotels. Visa cards are generally accepted more reliably than Mastercard, although acceptance may vary depending on the bank or ATM.

Credit and debit cards are commonly accepted in hotels, supermarkets and larger restaurants. However, cash remains the preferred payment method for taxis, local restaurants, markets and many small shops.

It is recommended to carry a reasonable amount of cash (XOF) for everyday expenses, especially when travelling outside the main commercial areas. Euros can be exchanged at banks and licensed exchange offices, while ATMs usually offer the most convenient way to obtain local currency.
